How I Got Out of a Rut by Trying Something New Every Month for a Year

Have you ever felt stuck? Really stuck in a rut?

“I feel like too many days pass without me even noticing, just this endless cycle of housework and cooking and errands.”

I recently found these words on a post-it note stuck inside the front cover of a book. It’s my handwriting. I might not remember writing it and sticking it there, but I remember feeling that way.

In 2014, I was a stay-at-home-mom. My autistic son was four years old and needed a lot of therapy and attention. But we were still two years away from that helpful diagnosis and deeper understanding. My life focused more and more on my son. I had quit my job as an LSAT instructor for Kaplan. All my thoughts and energy centered on parenting. Or boring housework.

In the fall, my son switched to a longer preschool day. My husband had started a graduate school program.

My days all felt the same. My mind felt dulled. I was in a rut.

While I was grateful for the privilege of being home with my son, I needed something else to focus some of my mental energy on.
